HEG 200 - Multicultural and Diversity Influences in Health and Wellness

3 Credits

This course will allow students to develop an understanding of the historical and contemporary societal factors that impact individual and group identity in healthcare and wellness, examining inequality in health care systems and society, considering the dimensions of race, class, and gender. Students will develop critical knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to recognize and understand the diversity of perspectives, needs, expectations, and behaviors impacting health and wellness in multicultural populations. The class will explore strategies that promote policy change and systemic equity through self-examination, social analysis, case studies, and competency building techniques. Students will use evidence-based strategies to propose future policy changes that promote equity-based healthcare.

Course Learning Outcomes
1.Identify the historical and contemporary societal factors, including race, class, and gender, that influence identity, healthcare, and wellness among diverse groups and communities.
2.Analyze the systems/structures involved in the creation and perpetuation of the dynamics of power, privilege, oppression, and opportunity that impact health and wellness.
3.Discuss the contribution of power, privilege, or oppression as barriers that hinder equity in global health or personal health care decisions.
4.Using the lens of race, class, and gender, analyze equity and ethical practices in health care as they pertain to the health and social justice of diverse populations.
5.Apply the principles of rights, access, equity, and autonomous participation to past, current, or future social justice in health care and wellness.
6.Explore strategies that can be used to break down implicit bias within the health care system and promote wellness across diverse populations.
7.Utilize communication skills that facilitate positive and effective cross-cultural relationships that promote wellness across diverse populations.
