CLT 204 - Clinical Microbiology I
A comprehensive study of bacteria of importance in human health and disease. Topics include the collection and processing of clinical specimens, the morphology, isolation, and identification of pathogens, with a focus on colonial, microscopic, biochemical and molecular characteristics, the interrelationships of microorganisms and human hosts, and the prevention and control of infectious diseases.
Prerequisite(s): CLT 100 and one of BIO 134, BIO 144, BIO 155, or BIO 148, all with a C or higher, or permission of instructor.
Course Learning Outcomes
1.Describe the structures found in a prototypical prokaryotic cell.
2.Explain the functions of prokaryotic cell structures.
3.Describe pre-examination procedures applicable to clinical microbiology.
4.Describe post-examination procedures applicable to clinical microbiology.
5.Describe or perform standard microbiological staining techniques.
6.Discuss the correct culture set up and incubation of microbial specimens.
7.Interpret the results of microbial cultures, stains, or tests.
8.Explain the principles behind different media utilized for growth, isolation, or identification of microbes.
9.Use standard microbial techniques or procedures to identify unknown organisms.
10.Describe the use of molecular or serological methods for the detection or identification of microbes.
11.Explain or demonstrate the proper aseptic technique or methods for control of microbes.
12.Explain the principles behind standard laboratory methods of antimicrobial testing.
13.Describe quality assessment practices for clinical microbiology.
14.Explain the clinical significance of clinical microbiology tests or results.
15.Discuss factors of select microbes that contribute to pathogenicity or disease.
16.Identify select microbes associated with specific diseases.
17.Summarize the biosafety procedures specific for the clinical microbiology laboratory.
