ART 118 - Perspectives of Art History I: Ancient

3 Credits

This course surveys the history of art from the Prehistoric era to the early Renaissance in Western history. The roots of European artistic developments will be examined with consideration given to the social, religious, and political contexts shaping art production during this time. Cross-cultural trends in non-European art will also be explored for influence and relevant global impact.

Course Learning Outcomes
1.Identify the stylistic features of major works of art and architecture from the Prehistoric era to the early Renaissance.
2.Analyze artworks in terms of form, technique, or expression.
3.Interpret the meaning of various works of art.
4.Relate works of art to their social, religious, economic, or political contexts.
5.Apply visual arts vocabulary used to discuss works of art, artists, or art history.
6.Apply visual arts concepts used to discuss works of art, artists, or art history.
7.Relate the development of Western artistic culture to that of other regions of the world.
8.Compose a well-reasoned argument based on the interpretation of artwork and other scholarly analysis.
