EMS 254 - Paramedic Clinical and Field Experience IV

4 Credits

This class is the final in a four course series intended to prepare competent entry-level Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains in a supervised clinical setting. Students will complete rotations of designated hospital specialty unit clinical participation. Students will focus on understanding the role of the specialty unit, performing authorized procedures, and observing the treatment of patients.

Students will be expected to complete all required minimum competencies and skills for both hospital and EMS field portions of the class. Students during this phase are expected to take the team leader approach and be able to care for patients without prompting from preceptor.

Accomplishment of each competency will be demonstrated with a required minimum number of patient/skill contacts for each required patient and conditions listed in the curriculum. Competencies are updated according to the NHTSA and National EMS Education Standards.

Prerequisite: EMS 203 and EMS 253; Co-requisite: EMS 204

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Identify and describe a variety of pediatric medical or traumatic emergencies which present to the pediatric emergency department.
2. Perform a thorough interview of patients with diverse pediatric medical or trauma complaints in the pediatric emergency department.
3. Perform a thorough assessment of patients with diverse pediatric medical or trauma complaints in the pediatric emergency department.
4. Perform patient care as appropriate for a paramedic for a pediatric emergency department patient (under the supervision of a nurse or physician).
5. Assess a variety of medical or traumatic emergencies which present in the prehospital environment.
6. Articulate a complete treatment plan for patients in the pre-hospital environment.
7. Serve as team leader of a prehospital emergency care team on emergency calls.
8. Perform patient care as appropriate for a paramedic in the prehospital environment.
9. Describe clinical interactions, including a presumptive diagnosis with treatments performed, in an appropriate format.
10. Articulate a complete treatment plan for a pediatric emergency department patient.
