PHL 109 - World Religions: Eastern Traditions
3 Credits
This course introduces methods of the academic study of religion and the major Asian religions. The course examines the history, doctrines , practices, institutions, and cultural expressions of religions originating in Asia. The relationship between religions and economic and political life are examined. Religious views of cosmos and nature show the impact of religion on the environment. The course examines differences and similarities among religions originating in Asia, differences and similarities between Asian and non-Asian religions, and the effects of Asian and non-Asian religions on each other.

Course Learning Outcomes
1.Distinguish among different kinds of theories of religion.
2.Interpret phenomena found in Asian religions using concepts from religious studies, philosophy, theology, or the social sciences.
3.Explain institutional structures associated with religions originating in Asia.
4.Describe relations between religions originating in Asia and political and economic life in the region.
5.Differentiate conceptions of humanity, divinity, cosmos, duty, virtue, and community in religions originating in Asia.
6.Recall the origins and development of religions originating in Asia and their spread to other parts of the world.
7.Explain the relations between religious views of cosmos and nature and sustainability efforts.
8.Describe the history of interactions between Asian and non-Asian religions
