ART 115 - Introduction to Illustration

3 Credits

This course explores a full range of current commercial illustration methods and techniques utilizing the following media: pen and ink, colored pencils, water based media, and marker rendering. This course is also designed to give the student hands on introductory experience in the electronic design studio environment. The student will become acquainted with the computer as another art tool. Students will be using software on the Macintosh computers as well as peripherals such as color scanner, and digital cameras.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Develop a conceptual project (from thumbnail to finish) employing traditional and digital processes, which could include one or more of the following: problem identification, research, ideation, editing, critiquing, assessment or other methods.
2. Demonstrate proficiency with a wide range of drawing and painting materials and tools, which may include pencil, colored pencil, marker, or water-based mediums.
3. Utilize computer technology (such as hardware, software, peripheral devices) with proficiency in drawing and painting activities.
4. Solve problems encountered in art project design with creativity.
5. Apply critiquing skills, which could include analysis, interpretation, or evaluation, to self-created, contemporary, or historical works of art.
6. Create work in a professional manner with confidence and informed aesthetic expression.
7. Display confidence and an informed aesthetic judgment when creating works of art.
8. Manage one’s own time effectively in meeting professionally-established intermediate and terminal project deadlines.
