NUR 050--Application of the Nursing Process
No Credit Introduction to curriculum concepts with emphasis on the use of the nursing process as the student assesses the basic needs of clients. Selected nursing content from the core curriculum is discussed. Selected academic and nursing skills will be reviewed. Competency will be assessed.
Prerequisites: NUR 050 is required for students who are transferring into the program, admitted with advanced standing, or returning to the program after an absence of one year. Completion of NUR 050 requirement is valid for one year. Students reentering NUR 111 do not need to take NUR 050. Course Learning Outcomes 1.Describe the Philosophy and Conceptual Framework of the Department of Nursing. 2.Describe the nursing process. 3.Apply the nursing process to selected patient situations. 4.Complete an individualized learning needs assessment. 5.Analyze one's own academic skills related to test-taking, prioritization, study habits and concept review. 6.Demonstrate competency in physical assessment. 7.Demonstrate competency in dosage calculation. 8.Demonstrate competency in pharmacology basics, including specific medications covered in the curriculum. 9.Demonstrate competency in computerized testing.

NUR 110--Foundations of Nursing
1 Credit NUR 110 is a nonclinical course in which the foundation of professional nursing is examined through exploration of the healthcare delivery system, nursing roles, nursing origins, and the educational, legal, and ethical bases of practice. Future challenges for the nursing profession are introduced.
Course Learning Outcomes 1. Discuss the impact of Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN). 2. Describe the roles of the professional nurse. 3. Examine the attitudes in a culture of safety vs. a culture of shame and blame. 4. Formulate communication and conflict resolution strategies in the evolving leadership role. 5. Describe the ethical and legal concepts on which professional nursing is based. 6. Describe the functions of professional nursing organizations. 7. Discuss trends in the healthcare delivery system. 8. Describe the various influences on professional nursing that may include social, political, or educational factors.

NUR 111--Fundamentals of Nursing
7 Credits NUR 111 focuses on the Basic Needs of the non acute adult patient to provide quality, safe patient centered care for diverse populations. The MCC nursing program’s conceptual framework and the core competencies of Associate Degree Nursing practice: Professional Identity, Nursing Judgment, Human Flourishing, and Spirit of Inquiry, are introduced. Students use knowledge, science and evidence to begin to assess a patient’s ability to meet Basic Needs and to implement fundamental nursing interventions. Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in high school chemistry, biology and either Sequential Math, Math A Regents or High School Algebra or MTH 098;
Corequisites: NUR 110; PSY 101; BIO 144; and MTH 160. Course Learning Outcomes 1.Identify members of the interprofessional team. 2.Identify data that indicate an individual is meeting Basic Needs, for selected non-acute patients. 3.Apply therapeutic communication techniques with selected non-acute patients. 4.Describe each step of the Nursing Process. 5.Describe basic principles of prioritization in professional nursing practice. 6.Identify data that indicates assistance is required to meet safety needs for selected non-acute patients. 7.Demonstrate accountable behaviors consistent with professional nursing practice. 8.Relate ethical behaviors to the principles of the ANA Code of Ethics. 9.List common evidence-based practice resources for professional nursing practice. 10.Apply evidence-based standards of professional nursing care at a fundamental level.

NUR 112--Nursing Care of the Adult and Child-I
8 Credits NUR 112 focuses on Basic Needs of adult and child patients using the Nursing Process to provide quality, safe patient centered care for diverse populations. Teamwork and collaboration are introduced and explored. Students use knowledge, science and evidence to manage, with assistance, the essential issues of patients with both acute and chronic conditions in several healthcare environments. The core competencies of Associate Degree Nursing practice introduced in NUR 111 are expanded upon in clinical nursing practice. This course has a required clinical component.
Prerequisites: NUR 110, NUR 111, MTH 160, PSY 101 and BIO 144, all with a minimum grade of C;
Corequisites: BIO 145, PSY 212 and ENG 101 or ENG 200, unless previously taken. NUR 210--Issues in Nursing
1 Credit NUR 210 is a nonclinical course in which issues of professional nursing are critically examined through exploration of current themes including quality and safety initiatives, leadership and management practices, licensure and legal implications, employment matters and professional responsibility.
Prerequisites: NUR 110 and NUR 112 with a minimum grade of C. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Apply concepts of quality and safety to move patients and families toward optimal outcomes. 2. Employ the Root Cause Analysis process as a method to improve the delivery of safe, quality health care. 3. Develop strategies for making a successful transition from student nurse to professional nurse, embracing ideals of integrity, responsibility, ethical practice, and legal regulations. 4. Establish the knowledge necessary to develop effective interprofessional leadership abilities. 5. Demonstrate beginning skills necessary to develop effective interprofessional leadership abilities. 6. Integrate ethical, legal and regulatory frameworks of nursing according to established standards of professional nursing (may include: New York State Licensure Law and Regulations, National Council of State Boards of Nursing, American Nurses' Association Code of Ethics, etc.)

Students use knowledge, science and evidence to manage the issues of patients with acute and chronic psychiatric conditions in a variety of healthcare environments. The core competencies of Associate Degree Nursing practice expanded upon in NUR 112 are applied to this patient population. This course has a required clinical component.
Prerequisites: NUR 112 with a minimum grade of C, BIO 144 & BIO 145 with a minimum grade of C, PSY 212 and ENG 101; corequisites: NUR 210, BIO 202 and SOC 101, unless previously taken. The core competencies of Associate Degree Nursing practice expanded upon in NUR 112 are applied to this patient population. This course has a required clinical component.
