Physics for Teachers

Microcredential

This 12 credit microcredential is designed to support in-service New York State certified teachers who are seeking supplementary and/or additional teaching certification in Physics. These courses cover a significant portion of the New York State learning standards and teaching competencies in this subject area.

Note: NYSED does not pre-approve any coursework for supplementary or additional teacher certifications. Teachers must submit their transcripts to NYSED directly to apply for these certifications. Prospective students are encouraged to reach out to the NYSED Office of Teaching Initiatives or their Regional Certification Office for more information on certification pathways and the application process.

NYSED requires a grade of C or higher in subject area classes in order for them to count towards certification.

Requirements:


PHY 145 - College Physics I (4 credits)
Prerequisite: MTH 165 taken concurrently or previously completed.

PHY 161 - University Physics I (4 credits)

Prerequisite(s): MTH 211 taken concurrently or previously completed; high school Regents physics with a grade of 70 or higher or PHY 131 with a grade of C or higher, or PHY 145 with a grade of C or higher.

PHY 261 - University Physics II (4 credits)
Prerequisite(s): PHY 161 with a grade of C or higher and MTH 211 with a grade of C or higher.

Optional Coursework: For teachers seeking additional credits in this subject area.

PHY 146 - College Physics II (4 credits)
Prerequisite(s): PHY 145 with grade of C or higher AND MTH 165/higher with grade of C or higher OR Level 9 Math Placement (or higher).

PHY 262 - Modern Physics (4 credits)
Prerequisite(s): PHY 261 with a grade of C or higher; MTH 212 or MTH 225 taken concurrently or previously completed.

Notes:


    · The courses in this microcredential are only available in-person at the Brighton Campus location
    · PHY 145, 146, and 161 are offered fall, spring, and summer terms. PHY 261 is typically offered fall and spring terms. PHY 262 is typically offered spring term only.
