Chemistry for Teachers

This 13 credit microcredential is designed to support in-service New York State certified teachers who are seeking supplementary and/or additional teaching certification in Chemistry. These courses cover a significant portion of the New York State learning standards and teaching competencies in this subject area.
Note: NYSED does not pre-approve any coursework for supplementary or additional teacher certifications. Teachers must submit their transcripts to NYSED directly to apply for these certifications. Prospective students are encouraged to reach out to the NYSED Office of Teaching Initiatives or their Regional Certification Office for more information on certification pathways and the application process.
NYSED requires a grade of C or higher in subject area classes in order for them to count towards certification.
Requirements:
CHE 151 - General College Chemistry I (4 credits)
Prerequisite(s): MCC level 9 Mathematics placement or MTH 165 with a minimum grade of C AND CHE 145 with a minimum grade of C or Chemistry Regents course grade of 75 or higher. (Students who did not take the Chemistry Regents course should contact the Department Chair.)
CHE 152 - General College Chemistry II (4 credits)
Prerequisite: CHE 151 with a minimum grade of C-; NYSED requires a grade of C or higher in CHE 151.
CHE 251 - Organic Chemistry I (5 credits)
Prerequisite: CHE 152 with a grade of C- or higher; NYSED requires a grade of C or higher in CHE 152.
Optional Coursework: For teachers seeking additional credits in this subject area.
CHE 252 - Organic Chemistry II (5 credits)
Prerequisite: CHE 251 with a grade of C- or higher, or permission of instructor; NYSED requires a grade of C or higher in 251.

- · The courses in this microcredential are only available in-person at the Brighton Campus location
· CHE 151 and 152 are offered fall, spring, and summer terms. CHE 251 is only offered in the fall; CHE 252 is only offered in the spring.
