Biology for Teachers

This 12 credit microcredential is designed to support in-service New York State certified teachers who are seeking supplementary and/or additional teaching certification in Biology. These courses cover a significant portion of the New York State learning standards and teaching competencies in this subject area.
Note: NYSED does not pre-approve any coursework for supplementary or additional teacher certifications. Teachers must submit their transcripts to NYSED directly to apply for these certifications. Prospective students are encouraged to reach out to the NYSED Office of Teaching Initiatives or their Regional Certification Office for more information on certification pathways and the application process.
NYSED requires a grade of C or higher in subject area classes in order for them to count towards certification.
Requirements:
BIO 155 - Introduction to Cell and Molecular Biology (4 credits)
Prerequisite(s): Living Environment Regents Exam score of 80 or higher (or equivalent for students that did not attend New York State Public School), or a C or better in BIO 120, BIO 156, or BIO 148; and MCC level 8 mathematics placement, or a C or better in MTH 104.
BIO 156 - Introduction to Organismal Biology and Ecology (4 credits)
Prerequisite(s): Living Environment Regents Exam score of 80 or higher (or equivalent for students that did not attend New York State Public School), or a C or better in BIO 120 or BIO 155.
BIO 221 - Principles of Biochemistry (4 credits)
Prerequisite(s): BIO 155 with a grade of C or better, and CHE 151 with a grade of C or better, or permission of instructor.
Optional Coursework: For teachers seeking additional credits in this subject area.
BIO 230 - Molecular Genetics (4 credits)
Prerequisite(s): BIO 155 with a grade of C or better and CHE 151 with a grade of C or better, or permission of instructor.
BIO 260 - General Ecology (4 credits)
Prerequisite(s): BIO 155 or BIO 156 with a grade of C or better, or permission of instructor.

· BIO 155 and 156 are offered fall, spring, and summer terms. BIO 221 and 260 are offered fall only; BIO 230 is offered spring only.
