Visual Arts for Teachers

This 12 credit microcredential is designed to support in-service New York State certified teachers who are seeking supplementary and/or additional teaching certification in Visual Arts. These courses cover a significant portion of the New York State learning standards and teaching competencies in this subject area.
Note: NYSED does not pre-approve any coursework for supplementary or additional teacher certifications. Teachers must submit their transcripts to NYSED directly to apply for these certifications. Prospective students are encouraged to reach out to the NYSED Office of Teaching Initiatives or their Regional Certification Office for more information on certification pathways and the application process.
NYSED requires a grade of C or higher in subject area classes in order for them to count towards certification.
Requirements:
ART 118 - Perspectives of Art History I: Ancient (3 credits)
ART 119 - Perspectives of Art History II: Modern (3 credits)
Complete two courses from the following list of electives. Teachers seeking additional credits in this subject area may elect to complete additional courses from the list.
- 1) AAD 104 - Introduction to Graphic Design, 2D (3 credits) OR ART 109 - Two-Dimensional Design: Foundation (3 credits)
- 2) AAD 112 - Graphic Design 1 (3 credits)
- Prerequisite(s): COM 104/AAD104 and COM 105/AAD 105, or permission of instructor.
- Prerequisite: AAD 104 or permission of instructor OR AAD 260 - Applied Imaging, Raster Graphics (3 credits)
- Prerequisite: COM 112/AAD 112
- Prerequisite: ART 104 or permission of instructor
- Prerequisite: ART 104 or permission of instructor
8) ART 130 - Sculpture I (3 credits)
- Prerequisite: ART 125
- Prerequisite: ART 104
· ART 118 and 119 are offered online fall, spring, and summer terms.
· Most other courses are in-person at the Brighton Campus in fall and spring, though some are occasionally offered in-person during the summer (typically ART 104, ART 204, and PHO 106).
