Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)

Monroe Community College (MCC) recognizes that learning happens both inside and outside the classroom. Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)* allows students to earn college credit for knowledge and skills gained through work, military service, exams, and other experiences. MCC, through Admissions and in consultation with Academic Services and departments, awards credit for prior learning in accordance with the State University of New York (SUNY) Credit for Prior Learning Framework. Credits are displayed on the student’s transcript and Degree Works.

What You Should Know:

  • A student is eligible for only one method of CPL per course. For example, a student who has already received prior learning credit through CLEP/DSST Credit-by-Exam Program, AP/IB or ACE, is not eligible for credit through portfolio.
  • CPL will appear on the transcript but will not be assigned a grade and will not impact the student’s GPA.
  • MCC does not guarantee the transferability of credits awarded through prior learning.
  • To meet residency requirements for graduation, students must complete at least 24 credits for Associate degree programs or 50% of credits for Certificates and Microcredentials directly at MCC. CPL does not apply toward these totals. Please refer to specific program requirements, as some departments may require additional residency hours.
  • CPL may not be used to acquire or maintain full-time status.

MCC recognizes several types of CPL, including but not limited to standardized published examinations; military training and education; and other forms of learning, such as professional work experience, industry credentials (e.g., certifications or licenses), community service or volunteer work, and/or formal training programs.

Monroe Community College will review and evaluate the following CPL types:
