Portfolio Assessment
If a CLEP or other CPL exam does not exist for a course, students can inquire if the course is eligible for a department-based portfolio assessment. A portfolio assessment is comprised of documents demonstrating achievement of learning outcomes of specific MCC courses. Examples include learning gained through work experience, professional licenses and certificates, and volunteer experiences.
The portfolio will be reviewed on an individual basis and credit may be granted under the circumstances below:
- Students have matriculated into a degree or certificate program and are in good academic standing.
- A course is eligible for portfolio assessment as determined by the department, and the course is applicable to the degree or certificate program desired at MCC.
- Portfolio credit will not be awarded for a course in which a student is currently enrolled, or in which they previously earned credit or audited.
- Portfolio Credit will be awarded only for active MCC courses.
- Students who are denied credit for a course following portfolio evaluation may not petition for the same credit again unless there has been significant change/addition of documentation.
Students follow the process below:
- The student will request an interview with the department to determine if their experience would qualify for portfolio review.
- A fee will be charged to the student for the portfolio review. Once the payment has been processed, the portfolio review process will continue with guidance from the department.
- The mechanism to assess a student’s portfolio for prior learning will be determined by the department granting the credit, and expectations will be reviewed with the student. Note: the expectations will vary by department and course, but the student should be prepared to gather evidence of learning and documentation proving that the learning outcomes have been achieved.
- The evaluating faculty member will review the Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) for the course for which credit is being sought and determine whether the student’s portfolio documentation demonstrates that the CLOs for the course have been met through the student’s prior learning experience.
- Similar to the process of granting credit for AP/IB, CLEP, ACE or Military (DOD transcript) credit, approved portfolio credit will be noted on the transcript. No grade will be recorded, nor is the grade point average affected.
