RAD 120 - Orientation/Clinical Education I

2 Credit

This course is an overview of diagnostic radiography and its role in health care delivery including industry standards, program specific policies, professional responsibilities, and clinical education experience. Emphasis is on orientation to the program and the clinical setting, radiography as a health science profession, professional medical ethics, diversity, and occupational and patient safety. Students use knowledge, science and evidence to acquire, with assistance, the essential skills for imaging patients with both acute and chronic conditions in medical imaging facilities. The core competencies of Radiologic Technology introduced in RAD 100 courses are expanded upon.

Course Learning Outcomes
1.Articulate core concepts of radiation safety and protection, evaluating associated risks and justification for procedures.
2.Explain essential MRI safety principles and analyze potential hazards to develop well reasoned safety decisions.
3.Apply standard precautions using evidence based reasoning to justify appropriate infection control actions.
4.Identify diverse patient backgrounds and analyze how cultural, social, and individual differences influence communication and care.
5.Reflect on personal cultural biases and evaluate how they may affect clinical judgment and patient interactions.
6.Explain key components of HIPAA and assess the implications of privacy breaches using logical reasoning.
7.Demonstrate patient transfer techniques while evaluating safety risks and articulating the rationale behind selected methods.
8.Compare ethical theories relevant to medical professionals and critique their application in clinical scenarios.
9.Describe professional ethical standards and reason through ethical dilemmas using logic and evidence.
10.Discuss radiologic technology within the broader health science context, evaluating its role, limitations, and societal impact.
11.Apply patient centered communication and care skills in medical imaging settings, articulating decisions and evaluating outcomes.
