Using AI effectively in Introductory Science and Social Science Courses

This SUNY Innovative Instructional Technology Grant (IITG) project developed new curriculum that integrated generative artificial intelligence (AI) into introductory science and social work courses. These activities helped the students develop digital literacy skills in using AI, critical workforce skills.
MCC’s team explored and developed AI-integrated material into an introductory science course, specifically Physical Geography (GEG 101). Materials were developed in which students use generative AI to learn about physical features of the Earth. One student activity use AI to facilitate conversation and analysis of climate change, and use AI to discuss physical processes tied to the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals (goals 13, 14, 15). Six new exercises were implemented in the classroom spring of 2025.
University of Buffalo’s team along with Principal Investigator Jonathon Little developed activities tied to the use of AI and Geograhical Information Systems (GIS) in a social science course.
Students that complete the exercises will earn a digital badge, demonstrating that they know how to ethically use generative artificial intelligence (AI) for honing study skills, developing text prompts, image creation, fact checking, as well as video creation.
