Defensive Tactics Instructor Course
Program Announcement
The Monroe County Public Safety Training Facility (PSTF), under the auspices of the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), will be holding the Municipal Police Training Council (MPTC) approved Defensive Tactics Instructor Course at 1190 Scottsville Road, Rochester, New York. This course prepares and certifies attendees to instruct topics and techniques related to law enforcement defensive tactics training. Participants are required to physically participate in all daily exercises and instruction, and are required to complete a proficiency test, written test, and presentation evaluation in order to receive certification.
Students who successfully complete this course will receive DCJS certification as a Defensive Tactics Instructor and four (4) college credits from Monroe Community College.
Session Dates
December 1 through 12, 2025, 8am to 4pm
Prerequisites
- Full or part-time active duty NYS certified police, peace, or campus public safety officer with a minimumtwo (2) years of experience;
- Completion of a DCJS approved Instructor Development Course;
- Sufficient physical condition to withstand rigorous daily training activities.
Required Attire and/or Equipment
Attire (dress code):
- BDU pants and T-shirt
- Physical fitness training attire
- Footwear – cross training or court shoes
Equipment:
- Water bottle
- Duty belt with hard plastic training handgun (red or blue handled)
- Handcuffs and key
- Mouthpiece
- Straight baton (fixed or collapsible)
- Flash drive: minimum 8 GB

Graduation Requirements
- 90% attendance (policy set by Monroe Community College)
- 70% passing grade on written examination(s)
- Satisfactory completion of proficiency tests
Course Tuition and Fees
- Tuition: $868.00 (per person)
- Estimated Student Fees: $113.00 (Student fees may vary each semester)
- Agencies will be billed directly
Note: Monroe Community College may find it necessary to revise tuition and fees as necessary and reserves the right to do so.
Reservations
Please complete the online Law Enforcement Program Course Reservation Form prior to the deadline of November 10, 2025. Submitting a reservation does not guarantee admittance. Agencies will receive a confirmation notice after the deadline. Please remember to check your junk/spam folder.
To avoid double tuition billing, a Certificate of Residence is required from students who reside outside of Monroe County.
