Security Officers Training

In 1992 the New York State Legislature passed the Security Guard Act, requiring that all security guards in the state be registered and receive mandated training in a series of courses. Prompted by this legislation, Monroe Community College's Public Safety Training Center offers the following required courses:

FIRST REQUIRED COURSE

Eight Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course
This course is required as the first step in obtaining a security guard registration card from the NYS Dept. of State. The course provides the student with a general overview of the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. Topics include:

  • the role of the security guard
  • legal powers and limitations
  • emergency situations
  • communications and public relations
  • access control
  • ethics and conduct.

The passing of an examination is required for successful completion of this course.

  • All courses are held 8 am to 5 pm.
  • The fee is $60.00.

SECOND REQUIRED COURSE

16 Hour On-The-Job Training Course (OJT)
This course must be completed within 90 days of employment as a security guard. The course provides the student with detailed information on the duties and responsibilities a security guard. Topics include:

  • the role of the security guard
  • legal powers and limitations
  • emergency situations
  • communications and public relations
  • access control
  • ethics and conduct
  • incident command system
  • terrorism.

The passing of an examination is required for successful completion of this course. 2-day course.

  • All courses are held 8 am to 5 pm.
  • The fee is $120.00.

Third Required Training Program

Eight Hour Annual In-Service Course
This course is structured to provide the student with updated and enhanced information on the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. Topics include:

  • the role of the security guard
  • legal powers and limitations
  • emergency situations
  • communications and public relations
  • access control
  • ethics and conduct.

This course must be completed each calendar year you hold a security guard registration. Your registration is issued for two years, therefore, you must complete two 8 Hour Annual In-Service training courses within your registration effective and expiration dates to be eligible for renewal.

  • All courses are held 8 am to 5 pm.
  • The fee is $60.00.

  • As of March 16, 2020, all courses at Monroe Community College will cease for an extended period.
  • NYS Department of State Division of Licensing Services has provided an update to guard card expiration dates. Extensions have been pushed back to June 7, 2020.
