ENG 101 - College Composition

3 Credits

A course emphasizing college-level, source-based writing (summary, analysis, synthesis, research), with special attention to critical reading, thinking, and oral communication skills. Students will draft, revise, and edit multiple thesis-driven essays. They will also study and practice argument and persuasion in written and oral communication.

Prerequisite(s):High school GPA of 80 or higher, OR completion of TRS 200 or ESL 201 with a C or higher, OR Directed Self-Placement facilitated by TRS and English faculty Co-requisite(s): Students should enroll in TRS 099 if they have a high school GPA of 71-79, or complete TRS 100 with a C or higher, or determined by directed self-placement

ENG 113 - Introduction to Creative Writing

3 Credits

An introductory, skill-building workshop to help students develop techniques that will prepare them to write the short fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and/or drama expected in ENG 213 Creative Writing. Emphasis is on developing observation skills, imaginative leaps, and formal techniques such as image, metaphor, symbol, character, conflict, dialogue, the poetic line, and setting/stage directions.

Prerequisite(s): Placement into ENG 101.

ENG 130 - Composition in STEM, Health, and the Applied Sciences

3 Credits

In this composition course, students will continue to strengthen their writing, information literacy, and critical thinking skills. Engaging in research, inquiry, and analysis, students will explore issues and ideas related to STEM, Health, and the Applied Sciences. They will gain familiarity with some of the different kinds of writing, reading, and research done in these fields (whether print or multimodal) and complete writing, reading, and research projects designed to continue to develop their understanding of and interest in specific academic and professional disciplines. This course may be organized around a broad topic or an overarching theme, such as climate change, medical ethics, or artificial intelligence. Additionally, an exploration of the disciplines themselves, how they shape and are shaped by cultural priorities and norms, will provide a focus for the course.

They will gain familiarity with some of the different kinds of writing, reading, and research done in these fields (whether print or multi-modal) and complete reading, writing and research projects designed to continue to develop their understanding of and interest in specific academic and professional disciplines. This course may be organized around a broad topic or an overarching theme, such as cultural capital, social justice, or community building. Additionally, an exploration of the disciplines themselves, how they shape and are shaped by cultural priorities and norms, will provide a focus for the course.

ENG 200 - Advanced Composition

3 Credits

Course focuses on written analysis, oral discourse, evaluation, argument and research. Assignments develop depth and proficiency in using language. Basic composition skills are assumed. This course may not be taken concurrently with ENG 101.

Prerequisite(s): SAT reading & writing score of 600 or higher, or ACT 26 or higher, or ELA regents 85 or higher, or high school GPA 90 or higher, or ENG 101 with a C or higher.

ENG 250 - Professional Communication

3 Credits

This course prepares students to produce practical and persuasive business and professional communications in both printed and digital formats appropriate for various audiences. Students will utilize writing and speaking skills necessary in various career fields and professional settings and create, revise, and edit several types of communications with attention to clarity, organization, formatting, and appropriate language. Research techniques, intercultural communication, problem solving, and preparation and delivery of oral communications will be addressed.

Prerequisite(s): ENG 101 with a grade of C or better or ENG 200 with a grade of C or better.

This course prepares students to produce instructive, informational, technical, and persuasive documents in both printed and digital formats appropriate for various audiences. Students will utilize writing and speaking skills necessary in various technical fields to demonstrate the effective construction of common technical writing genres with an emphasis on clarity, conciseness, and accuracy. Research techniques, information design, effective use of visuals, and preparation and delivery of oral communications will be addressed.

Prerequisite: ENG 101 with a grade of C or better or ENG 200 with a grade of C or better. *These courses do not fulfill the requirements for a Literature elective.

ENG 273 - Creative Writing Capstone: Publishing and the Profession

This course seeks to familiarize students with the processes necessary to furthering their personal and/or professional development as creative writers. To this end, the course will introduce students to the submission process, to transfer opportunities, and to publishing/reading venues both in Rochester and around the country.
