| CLT 100 - Introduction to Medical Laboratory Technology
Clinical laboratory personnel are essential members of the healthcare team. This course helps students explore careers in the clinical laboratory and introduces them to the inner workings of this important health system department. Details of the clinical laboratory technician program are provided, and students explore learning methods that can improve success in the program. Viewing human health in a global context will also be introduced. May be taken by non-majors. 1 Credit. |  |
| CLT 110 - Specimen Procurement and Processing
This course is an introduction to the collection and processing of patient specimens for clinical laboratory testing. The primary emphasis is venipuncture technique and its importance in sample quality. Other topics include communication skills, quality assurance, safety and infection control procedures, applicable medical terminology, capillary blood collection, collection of specimens other than blood, and specimen handling. 1 Credit. Prerequisite(s): CLT 100 with a grade of C or higher AND any one of BIO 134, BIO 142, BIO 144 each with a grade of C or higher; or permission of instructor. |  |
| CLT 115 - Phlebotomy Practicum
In this clinical based course, students will be assigned to a local affiliate's patient service center for 40 hours. | CLT 130 - Body Fluids and Urinalysis
This course is the study of the structure and function of the processes which result in urine and body fluid production. The emphasis of the course will be on analysis and interpretation of test results and will include pathophysiological correlations to the test results. Topics will include urinalysis, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, serous fluid analysis, analysis of transudates, exudates and gastrointestinal contents and semen analysis. 2 Credits. Prerequisite(s): CLT 100 with a grade of C or higher AND any one of BIO 134, BIO 142, BIO 144 each with a grade of C or higher; or permission of instructor.

| CLT 150 - Histology Techniques
An introduction to histological techniques used in the clinical laboratory setting. Topics include tissue preparation, fixation, embedding, sectioning, mounting and staining to facilitate microscopic examination. The student will be required to identify common cellular and tissue structures and will be required to follow all laboratory and safety protocols. 1 Credit. | CLT 201 - Immunology
An introduction to basic concepts in immunology. Detailed analysis of the components and mechanism of action of the innate, humoral, and cellular immune systems. Topics also include immune system dysfunctions such as hypersensitivity, autoimmunity, immunoproliferative disorders, and immunodeficiencies. The immune response to bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites will also be discussed. 3 Credits. | CLT 202 - Serological Techniques
An introduction to the theory and practice of serological testing with emphasis on clinical significance and disease correlation. Topics include traditional techniques and molecular methods for detection and confirmation of disease states. 1 Credit. | CLT 204 - Clinical Microbiology I
A comprehensive study of bacteria of importance in human health and disease. Topics include the collection and processing of clinical specimens, the morphology, isolation, and identification of pathogens, with a focus on colonial, microscopic, biochemical and molecular characteristics, the interrelationships of microorganisms and human hosts, and the prevention and control of infectious diseases. 4 Credits. | CLT 205 - Clinical Microbiology II
There are many fascinating microorganisms that cause a wide range of human diseases. This course explores mycobacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses that affect human health. Topics that will be discussed include techniques to isolate and identify the organisms, methods to treat infections and prevent their spread, the correlation to human disease, and the effects of infectious diseases on communities around the world. 2 Credits. Prerequisite(s): CLT 204 with a C or higher or permission of instructor. |  |
| CLT 210 - Clinical Chemistry
Clinical chemistry practitioners perform biochemical analysis of serum or plasma and other body fluids, and the results of these analyses provide a snapshot of patient health and support the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Students will apply their prior knowledge of analytical chemistry, cellular biology, and physiology to the topics in this course. The laboratory's role in healthcare equity, common clinical chemistry analytes, and correlation of results to human health and disease will be discussed. Students will become proficient with laboratory techniques, quality practices, and equipment that are the basis for most clinical chemistry instrumentation in the field. 4 Credits. | CLT 220 - Immunohematology
An introduction to the field of practical Immunohematology and Blood Banking. Emphasis is placed on the theoretical knowledge of human genetics, blood groups, blood cell grouping, blood components, fractionation, storage and washing, transfusion therapies, transfusion reactions, and alloantibody and autoantibody formation. Additionally, good laboratory practices, neatness, organization, attention to detail and professionalism are revisited. 4 Credits. Prerequisite(s): CLT 110; BIO 148 or BIO 155; one of BIO 135, BIO 143 or BIO 145; and CLT 201. Each course with a grade of C or higher. |  |
| CLT 230 - Hematology and Coagulation
A comprehensive study of the physiology of the normal hematopoietic system and the pathophysiology of an abnormal hematopoietic system and ramifications of these lesions in maintaining homeostasis. Emphasis is on the mechanics of test procedures, interpretation of hematology test results and correlation of the results with disease. 4 Credits. | CLT 250 - Clinical Rotations
Clinical experience is an important component of the clinical laboratory technician program. Students spend over 300 hours in area laboratories where they apply the knowledge gained from previous CLT courses to clinical practice. Under the supervision of affiliate laboratory personnel, students verify pre-analytic specimen integrity, conduct routine testing, perform quality control procedures, and demonstrate professional communication skills in the post-analytic reporting of results. Rotations include clinical chemistry, hematology/hemostasis, immunohematology, microbiology, urinalysis, serology, and pre-analytics. 7 Credits. Prerequisite(s): CLT 205, CLT 210, CLT 220, and CLT 230, each with a C or higher.

The Clinical Rotations are intended to expose the CLT students to a functioning lab in an integrated health care environment and to assure the students meet the CLT competencies as described in the CLT Student Handbook. As such, emphasis is placed on professional conduct and performance of procedures in accordance with protocols of the department.
Under the supervision of laboratory personnel, students will demonstrate professional behavior, conduct routine procedures, develop their analytical skills and apply knowledge acquired in the program. Students will verify preanalytical specimen integrity, follow analytical laboratory protocols and demonstrate exceptional communication skills in the post analytical reporting of results. There are approximately six departments; Body Fluids/Urinalysis, Immunology/Serology, Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry, Blood Bank and Hematology. There are three rotational courses; CLT 251, 253 and 255. Therefore, on average a student will rotate through two departments per rotation. 2 Credits. | CLT 260 - Medical Laboratory Technology Seminar
In the final semester of the clinical laboratory technician program, the students transition from learning in classrooms on campus to hands-on practice in clinical settings. This course bridges those worlds and helps prepare the students to move into laboratory careers. It includes practice for the certification exam, reading professional publications, and communicating in and about the laboratory. A final project connecting the global health modules located throughout the program will be developed. Students will also learn about the licensure and certification application processes and prepare for job applications. 2 Credits.
