PPE 100 - Introduction to Sport Science
A course designed to expose the student to the components of the sport sciences, including anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, sport medicine, and sport technology as they relate to human exercise. Students will apply the integration of physical fitness principles and health components to formulate a personal wellness plan relative to their needs. This class includes both theory and practice through a lecture and laboratory experience. 4 Credits.
PPE 106 - Individual Sports
A course based on teaching competencies for students future use, focusing on individual sports such as tennis, golf, and racquetball. Students will learn skill development, teaching and coaching strategies, and lifetime fitness benefits. 3 Credits.
PPE 120 - Team Sports
A course based on teaching competencies for students future use focusing on team sports such as softball, soccer, and basketball. Students will learn skill development, class organizational principles, and coaching strategies. 3 Credits.
PPE 150 - Adventure Bound
A course in which the student will participate in a variety of provocative community/outdoor oriented experiences and classroom presentations. High and low project adventure ropes courses, trust and initiative games, camping and survival skills, circus acrosports, canoeing and hiking sojourns, service to populations at risk, etc., are a few of the adventure experience options from which the student will select several to participate in. 3 Credits.
PPE 155 - Sport Performance Coaching
Principles of metabolic training, muscle strength and endurance training, and cardiovascular training will be applied to athletic performance. Specifically the course will focus on the development of power, speed, acceleration, agility and quickness for the development of high quality sport performance. Students will design a testing scheme for sport performance, use various modalities to analyze performance, and design a personal wellness plan. 3 Credits.
PPE 170 - Introduction to Sport Medicine
Covers the nature, philosophy, and practice of the field of sport medicine. Prevention, emergency care, and rehabilitation as they pertain to certain athletic injuries will be the focus of the course. This course satisfies the requirements of the NYS Education Department Coaching Certification Course: Health Science Applied to Coaching. 3 Credits.
PPE 175 - Philosophy and Principles of Physical Education and Athletics
Designed to expose the professional preparation student to the history and development trends of the field. Specifically, exposure to the subfields of Physical Studies will be explored. These will include, but not be limited to, Physical Education, Sport Medicine, Sport Psychology, Exercise Physiology, Motor Learning, History of Sport, Sociology of Sport, Recreation, Health Education, Adapted Physical Education, Coaching, and current issues. Special emphasis on the role of coaching as part of the education system, legal and health considerations, and local, state and national roles as they pertain to sport. This course satisfies the requirements of the NYS Education Department Coaching Certification Course: Principles, Philosophy and Organization of Athletics. 3 Credits.
PPE 179 - Lifeguarding
A full semester course to certify students in American Red Cross Lifeguarding. Students need to be strong swimmers and must be able to do the breaststroke with whip kick, sidestroke with inverted scissors, and freestyle with rotary breathing. The students must be able to tread water using egg beater kick and surface dive and retrieve a 10 pound brick. Each class warm up consists of 500-yard swim (20 lengths). This course includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and standard first aid. At the completion of this course, the student must pass the Red Cross written and practical test for swimming. American Red Cross Administration Fee is $5.00. 2 Credits.
PPE 208 - Wellness, Exercise, and Sport Psychology
As the demand for enhanced physical performance continues and the focus on Wellness grows, the cognitive or mental aspects within wellness and physical activity is exposed. Wellness, Exercise, and Sport Psychology has evolved through this need. Specifically, this course will relate the application of conventional psychological areas (personality, motivation, aggression, etc.) to the arena of wellness and physical activity. The application of psychological skills to performance and wellness is also an essential element of this ever-changing field. 3 Credits.
PPE 209 - Theories and Techniques of Coaching
This course is designed to examine theories and techniques in coaching through developing information, organization and management skills. Development of technical information, safety aspects and human relationships will be studied. The practicum experience brings the student to an on-site awareness and participation. This course satisfies the state guidelines for elementary and secondary coaching certification. This course satisfies the requirements of the NYS Education Department Coaching Certification Course: Theory and Technique of Coaching. 3 Credits.
PPE 211 - Selected Certifications in Youth Sport
This course is designed to provide essential certifications for pre-service and in-service professionals in the field of health and physical education, coaching and athletics. Specifically, students will participate in the required experiences leading towards certification in Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE), Dignity For All Students Act (DASA), Mandated Reporter, Heads-Up Concussion Training and Youth Sport Coaching curricula in New York State. 1 Credit.
PPE 213 - Gymnastics Theories and Practices
Focus is on the student's attainment of methods, theory and skills for teaching artistic, rhythmical, and acrobatic gymnastics to participants of pre-school through high school physical education/recreation programs. The history and philosophy of gymnastics and the administration of gymnastic programs (classes, exhibitions, meets and clubs) will also be studied. (Open to Physical Studies students only.) 2 Credits.
PPE 214 - Early Childhood Physical Education
Early childhood games and activities will be introduced and practiced. The emphasis of this course will be the contribution of games and activities to the cognitive, social, and psychomotor development of children. Online sections of this class require observation time at formal school and informal activity settings. 3 Credits.
PPE 240 - Practicum in Professional Skills
An overview and introduction to various professional skills to groups and individuals. The ability to effectively communicate ideas, information, and develop skills that are fundamental to the fields of exercise, wellness or sport. The goal of this course is to provide theoretical and practical experience in individual and group professional skills and written plan for effective professional interactions useful to the student's career path. Electronic recording of the professional skills for skill critique and development is required. 3 Credits.
PPE 245 - Dance Methods and Techniques for Physical Studies Majors
A dance technique course designed for dance major students. Dance theory and technique will be covered and the students will be required to develop a dance lesson plan and lead the class in warmups. (Open to Physical Education students only.) 1 Credit.
PPE 250 - Fitness and Wellness
A course designed to provide an enhanced fitness and wellness experience. The content includes the assessment of present fitness level and the development and practice of a balanced, individualized physical fitness program. Additionally, the course provides a theory based and practical experience in Stress Management and explores the roles of Stress and Exercise on Wellness. The online section(s) of this class require outside physical activity and testing. Students taking PEC/PPE 250 may take one, but not both, of the following courses in addition to this course: PEC 148, PEC 253. A student may earn credit for PEC 250 or PPE 250, but cannot earn credit for both courses because they are equivalent courses. 3 Credits.
PPE 271 - Issues and Perspectives in Wellness, Sport and Exercise
Designed to explore professional issues within the field of sport science. Topics such as sociological issues, physiology of exercise, and therapeutic exercise as they affect sport and sport participation will be explored. 4 Credits.
PPE 272 - Diversity and Equity Issues in Health and Wellness
This course explores the issues of race, class, and gender from an interdisciplinary and humanistic perspective as they apply to health and wellness. The student will develop an understanding of the historical and contemporary societal factors that impact individuals and group identity. Further examination of social structures in the development of concepts such as power, privilege, oppression and opportunity will be explored in both global application and in the development of health and wellness in current society. Students will use self-examination, social analysis, reflection on text, movies and media, as well as case studies to develop the critical knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to recognize and understand the diversity of perspectives, needs, expectations and behaviors impacting health and wellness in multicultural populations. 4 Credits.
PPE 275 - Physiology of Exercise
Exercise physiology is the scientific basis for the field of physical education. This course provides students with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the body's responses and adaptations to exercise. Each of the body's systems will be reviewed with a focus on the influences of activity. Laboratory experiences will allow students to integrate and apply the concepts of exercise physiology through investigative experiments. 4 Credits.

Prerequisite: BIO 135 OR BIO 145.
