Changing Your Major or Program

Thinking about changing your major or program? It’s an important decision that can impact your future as a student and beyond graduation. Whether you’re just starting to consider changing programs or if you’re sure, here’s what to do.

MEET WITH YOUR SUCCESS COACH OR CAREER COUNSELOR

We’re here to support you through the process. When you talk to your Success Coach or Career Counselor, we’ll help you:

  • Clarify your goals: Academic, career, and personal.
  • Discuss your plan: Review your current academic plan and explore possible new options.
  • Understand requirements: Many majors have prerequisites, and some have different admission requirements, deadlines, and application steps.
  • Evaluate your graduation timeline: Understand how changing your major or program might affect how soon you can graduate.

You can schedule an appointment with your Success Coach in myMCC. Click Schedule Appts → Student Success Coach → Schedule Appt. with Success Coach.

USE DEGREE WORKS

You can use the “What If’ tool in Degree Works to see how your current and completed courses would count in a different major.
Log in to Degree Works.

  • Select “What If” below your Student ID and Name information.
  • Select the program you’re interested in.
  • Click “Process” to view how your completed courses apply and what courses are still needed.

KEEP IN MIND

  • Changing your major or program might add more time to your degree completion plan or affect which credits you've already completed still apply.
  • Your financial aid eligibility might change based on what major or program you choose.
  • Some programs, especially competitive health-related ones, have specific admission requirements and deadlines.

Your Success Coach must submit the program/major change request for you—you cannot submit the request on your own.
