Unexpected financial emergencies is one of the top reasons community college students drop out of school. To address this issue, Monroe Community College became the first community college in Western New York to host Dreamkeepers, a nationally-recognized emergency student aid program that helps deserving, eligible students persist in their studies. Students who apply to Dreamkeepers can receive mini-grants of up to $500 to assist with expenses related to housing, food, utilities, and child care, ensuring that they can continue with their studies and make progress toward their goals.
Dreamkeepers has had an overwhelmingly positive impact on student outcomes. Approximately one-third of students who apply for Dreamkeepers receive a grant. More than $120,000 in grants were awarded over the last four years, resulting in 81 percent of recipients remaining in school or persisting to graduation.

Dreamkeepers Grant Application Applications are reviewed by MCC’s Student Services staff and students are notified within 48 hours if their request has been approved. The grant funds then are disbursed directly to the vendor (i.e. auto repair shop, utility company). Recipients are required to complete an online financial literacy class to help them address the root causes of their financial situation.
